  1. You're required to have a registered agent in most states. Having one ensures your legal notices are in good hands and helps you avoid penalties.
  2. A registered agent is an adult or authorized business that's around during normal business hours to accept mail or hand-delivered court documents on your behalf. They must have a physical address—not a PO Box—in the same state where your business formed or got foreign qualified.
  3. Yes. Depending on your state, you'll just need to pay a fee, and file paperwork first. If you want to make us your new registered agent, we'll pay for and take care of that paperwork at no cost to you.
  4. You might get things like legal notices (including service of legal process), official state correspondences, annual report notices, or junk mail (which we’ll shred for you). For legal service of process and other urgent mail, we will upload the documents to your account, email you to let you know there’s mail in your account (including reminders if you don’t open your email), and mail a postcard notice to the address we have on file. For all other mail, we will upload the documents to your account and email you.
  5. Yes. If you're interested, you can get legal advice from our plan attorneys.
  6. Different states use different names, but all three agents fulfill the same duties.
